Eric Frost Douglas was born in Pasadena, California and raised on a ranch in the nearby town of Glendora. He began writing and singing songs in 1969 as a student at Harvard. After graduating, he continued to write and perform while pursuing a career as a journalist. He took a break from journalism in 1975 to tour with his band; he was a winner of the Aspen songwriting festival that year.
Eric then went to work for the San Francisco Chronicle, but never gave up his passion for songwriting. Eric released two albums, “Songwriter Shuffle” and “Shadowland, in the early 2000s and has been on a steady roll ever since. His third album, “Something To Say,” was released in 2019 and featured 16 new songs. His fourth album, “Keys to the Heart” came out the following year and featured the single “Another California Day.”
In the next two years he released a fifth album, “Hope,” whose title track attracted hundreds of thousands of listeners. He also released a rock opera called “The Storm, an American Song Cycle,” about the turbulent years of the Trump presidency.
In 2023, he released another album, “Persephone.” And in 2024 he released his 8th album called “Open Sky,” whose title track was inspired by Eric’s travels in Morocco and the Sahara Desert.
A prolific songwriter in multiple genres, Eric’s style varies from progressive rock to jazz to country. “I never wanted to be pinned down because I loved so many different kinds of songs,” he says. “Growing up, I was equally drawn to Sinatra, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and musical theater.”
Eric describes his craft as “plein air” songwriting, because he composes many of his songs while outdoors, inventing lyrical lines and melodies and singing them into a voice recorder. He then returns to his studio and arranges the songs on guitar. Eric has collaborated with arranger and producer Tommy Dunbar on all of his albums and singles, with the exception of the first two, which were produced by Doug Chancellor.
“I plan to keep on writing songs as long as I can,” he says. “It’s always an adventure to come up with a new fragment of melody and lyric and then see where it leads.”
Eric is married and has four children. He lives in Northern California. In his professional life, he is the founder of a consulting company, Leading Resources Inc. (LRI), that focuses on organizational development. He’s the author of two books and multiple articles on governance, strategy and leadership.
